Item Description
Stylish, early Modernist frame featuring decorative banding and applied metal motifs. Complete with a hand coloured lithograph print of a painting by the renowned German artist Heinrich Sperling (1844 - 1924) Signed and dated 1905 in print to the lower right. Heinrich Sperling was a German painter best known for his realistic depictions of animals, most often dogs. Many of Sperling’s paintings were commissioned portraits of the aristocracy’s dogs. He studied painting under fellow German artists Carl Constantin Steffeck and Paul Friedrich Meyerheim, who also specialized in highly detailed animal portraits.
The print was produced by Meisenbach Riffarth & Co. Berlin (Georg Meisenbach was a German engraver and inventor of the autotype. In 1883 Meisenbach & Co. merged with Heinrich Riffarth & Co. and founded Meisenbach Riffarth & Company, a well known European graphic arts company)
Good antique condition with a number of minor scratches, nicks and knocks to the frame - nothing of particular note and all normal for age and use.
