Item Description
A superb quality, 18th century, jasperware teapot made by John Turner of Lane End, Longton, Staffordshire. This is impressed twice, to the base, with “TURNER & Co.” This mark was used in two separate periods in the potteries history, from 1780 to 1786 and again from 1803 to 1806 when the pottery closed but this teapot is from the earlier period, dating from c.1785. The beautifully coloured solid jasperware is typical of the 18th century and it is decorated in white relief which is very fine quality, with fabulous detail, and has a slightly waxy feel. There is beading around the acanthus leaves on the lid and two of these small beads are missing. There is also a small piece of white relief missing from the rim of the teapot. The spout has a strange cut in the end but it appears that this was done in the manufacture and the teapot pours perfectly. All of this can be seen in the images and none of these very minor faults detract from the beauty of the piece.
