Item Description
A nice quality, 19th century, white marble mortar with a boxwood pestle. This mortar is probably from Northern Italy. The colour of the marble, which is an off white with a fine grey vein, is typical of that found at the marble quarries in Carrara. The pestle is well turned from boxwood. There is a small chip on the pouring lip of the mortar, and it has had a further bump on the rim which has resulted in a chip which is still in place. The pestle is in excellent condition and has a beautiful patina.
Dimensions: Mortar: Width 24cm. Height 15.7cm. Pestle: Length 25.4cm. Diameter 4.8cm.
