Item Description
A large, Minton tile from a series, designed by Moyr Smith, depicting authors and their works. The back of the tile is moulded with “MINTON, HOLLINS & Co STOKE ON TRENT 145 L.B.” and it dates from c.1880. The face of the tile is printed in brown, on an ivory background, with a scene showing “Patient Griselda”. Chaucer tells the tale of Griselda in “The Clerk’s Tale” which is one of the Canterbury Tales. There is a portrait of Chaucer in the bottom right hand corner of the tile and the tile is signed by Moyr Smith just under the figure of Griselda. There is a large chip to the bottom left hand corner of the tile.
Dimensions: 20.2cm. square by 1cm. thick.
