Item Details

A large, Minton tile from a series, designed by Moyr Smith, depicting authors and their works. The back of the tile is moulded with “MINTON, HOLLINS & Co STOKE ON TRENT 145 L.B.” and it dates from c.1880. The face of the tile is printed in brown, on an ivory background, with a scene from “The Witch of Atlas” by Percy Shelley and there is a portrait of Shelley in the bottom right hand corner. The tile is signed by Moyr Smith just under the figure of Atlas. There is a large chip to the bottom left hand corner of the tile but otherwise it is in good condition. The Witch of Atlas is a major poetic work written by Shelley in 1820 but not published until after his death in 1824.
