https://www.thehoarde.com/dealers/appleby-antiquesA late 17th/ early 18th century, white marble mortar with a lignum vitae pestle. This mortar is probably from Northern Italy. The colour of the marble, which is an off white with a fine grey vein, is typical of that found at the marble quarries in Carrara. It is quite an unusual shape, with only two lobes rather than the usual four and this style was generally earlier. The pestle is nicely turned from lignum vitae which, being such a hard wood, is perfect for use as a pestle. There is some chipping to the rim of the mortar, which can be seen in the images, but it is still in very good, usable condition. There is a small chip to the end of the handle of the pestle.
Dimensions: Mortar: Length 24cm. Width 18.5cm. Height 13cm. Pestle: Length 27.5cm. Diameter 6.2cm.
