Item Description
A 19th century, Minton, dust pressed tile, block printed in black with “King Frog and King Stork”. This is marked, in the moulding on the reverse, “MINTONS CHINA WORKS STOKE ON TRENT” and it dates from c.1880. It is also marked “MINTON” within a globe, surrounded by “STOKE UPON TRENT WALBROOK LONDON”. It is from a series of tiles depicting Aesop’s Fables. The frogs were in awe of their king but after a while they decided he was too quiet and he didn’t move enough. Jupiter hears them complaining and, to teach them a lesson, sends down a stork to eat them. This example has tiny chips to the corners but otherwise is in good condition.
