Item Description
A large, Minton tile from a series, designed by Moyr Smith, depicting authors and their works. The back of the tile is moulded with “MINTON, HOLLINS & Co, PATENT TILE WORKS STOKE ON TRENT 145 L.B.” and it dates from c.1880. The face of the tile is printed in brown, on an ivory background, with a scene from “The Death of Marmion” by Sir Walter Scott and there is a portrait of Scott in the bottom right hand corner. The tile is signed by Moyr Smith just under the dying figure of Marmion. It is in excellent condition. Lord Marmion was a fictional character living in the time of Henry VIII and he was killed at the Battle of Flodden.
