https://www.thehoarde.com/dealers/appleby-antiquesA rare, 18th century, Wedgwood, black basalt inkwell. This is marked “WEDGWOOD”. The letters in the mark are all individually impressed. This type of mark was used very early in Wedgwood’s history, between 1759 and 1769. Wedgwood started to experiment with the production of a black pottery in 1766 and basalt was in commercial production by 1768 so this piece must have been made in the first two years of basalt production, either 1768 or 1769. The inkwell is a very simple, square form with no decoration and the lid is made from a white metal. This is a charming little rarity and it is in excellent condition.
Dimensions: 3.4cm. square by 5cm. high.
