Item Description
A rare, 19th century, sycamore breadboard. This has quite an unusual motto to the border which is deeply carved with “Cut and come again” in a Gothic script. This is against a textured background and the remainder of the border is carved with wheat. However, the most unusual thing about the board is that the centre is carved with a basket weave design. The entire board is exceptionally well carved and is the work of a very skilled craftsman. It is in very good condition. There is the usual scratching, and knife marks, to the centre, and to the high rim between the centre and the border, but due to this high rim the border shows very little sign of wear. This is an exceptional board and it dates from c.1860.
