Item Description
Early 19th century American four poster bed quilt.
A piece blocked, scrap quilt made from chintz material.
The cut out at the base was a solution to stop your bedding gathering up around the bedposts, so a simple design change came about by cutting out corners and hey presto they fit perfectly.
This quilt also has its address written onto it, and the woman who owned it, Mrs. John. A. Paine of 47 Broad Street...but Broad Street where, well it is American and very likely New England, but seeing as we have found a Broad Street in Burlington, Boston, Philadelphia and lots of other New England cities we cannot be sure of its actual home.
The quilt has damage to some of the square's and around the edge but no holes straight through the quilt and has never been cleaned since Mrs Paine last had it cleaned it seems as it is somewhat dirty, but only the kind of dirt collected by years of storage.
This type of quilt was mostly found in the early to mid 1800's in the New England area.
It is a great size, 247cm/97.2" width across the top x 241cm/94.8" down the centre of the quilt.
