1930s Modernist Pedestal Desk P.E Gane Ltd

A very good looking twin pedestal Modernist desk with makers label, very likely designed by J P Hully, a British Modernist who worked with Gane furniture manufacturers in Bristol. His design life and tenure at Gane overlapped with that of Marcel Breuer... Hully’s style of design is known for its clear shapes and being functional rather than ornamental etc. We have an image of a single pedestal desk of the same design found in archives designed by Hully.

A little maker's history - “P.E. Gane Ltd (1909-1954), were cabinet makers who became associated with producing quality pieces. In the 1930s the firm successfully collaborated with Marcel Breuer, the Modernist. Philip Gane’s two sons, Leslie and Crofton joined the firm and took over when their father died in 1933.”

Super simple elegant lines to this one - very much of the era. It’s of usable and placeable proportions with a long central drawer flanked by a flight of 4 drawers to the right and a flank of 3 drawers to the left with the lowest drawer being of double depth and having a false handle and front. The desk sits firm with no splits to the sides and could be placed inside a room due to it’s well panelled back. Makers label to the inside of the top left hand drawer.

This one sits in fine order with sensible day to day wear and has enjoyed a session in our workshop so expect drawers to run well and nothing nasty. There are historic ink stains to the drawer interior bases, light age marks etc to the top, sides and plinth but again nothing off putting. Ready to place.

A rather well designed and seldom desk C1930s by PE Gane Ltd.
