Original C18th Copper Engravings South African Man & Woman

Stunning Pair of Original Eighteenth-Century Copper Engravings of South African Hottentot Man & Hottentot Woman.

Beautiful colours and vibrancy considering they are 228 years old! This pair of original copper engravings of a South African Hottentot man and Hottentot woman were engraved in the late eighteenth century by J. Chapman and published in 1795.

J. Chapman was one of the most gifted stipple engravers of the late eighteenth century and during his career engraved exceptional subjects after the designs of Raphael Courbould and J. Smith. He also worked closely with Thomas Macklin on his Shakespeare series. 

The modern large black mounts and dark surrounds with gilt detailing frame the engravings perfectly which all adds to giving them the wow factor.

Delivery to Scotland will be an extra cost – please message us with your postcode for a delivery quote.  Please note: If you decide to return this item back to us then the cost of the original courier delivery will be deducted from any monies due back to you also.

We endeavour to get the pieces to you as quickly as possible.  Turn around is generally 7-14 days dependent on your location and the courier’s delivery schedule. All deliveries are curb side door to door but the delivery driver will be happy to help you carry the piece into your home provided it is on the ground floor (please do make sure someone strong is on hand to help with lifting the item into your property).  Also please check the measurements to make sure that the item will fit through all entrances.
