This small 19th century inkwell is the perfect piece of antiquity to bring a touch of royal mystique to your desk! Crafted with silver plate, its fascinating design takes the form of an Egyptian pharaoh whose regal head will make any workspace stand out!
Handmade by the known Sheffield silversmith makers Lee & Wigfull.
Very unusual & rare, made from silver plate over base metal.
A feature that stands out is the superb detail to the Pharoeh's head incredible collectors piece.
It has smooth groves on the flanks for you to rest your pen, no pen included so you are aware.
A nice small size being 15 cm high and 14.5 cm depth.
Exceptionally well cast detail.
The head lifts up to reveal a small cobalt blue glass bowl for the ink to sit in.
Circa late 19th century Victorian era.
Stamped with makers mark L & W underneath.
George Shadford Lee & Henry Wigfull where active in Charlotte Street Works, Sheffield, together with Henry Wigfull. The firm was described as Manufacturing Silversmith, Electro Plater and Britannia Metal Smith. The partnership between George Shadford Lee and Henry Wigfull was dissolved in 1870. The business was continued by Henry Wigfull under the same style and address (John Street Works, Sheffield).
The firm was converted in 1899 into a limited liability company under the style of Lee & Wigfull (Sheffield) Ltd. The firm used the trade marks ALBION SILVER and INSIGNIA PLATE.
The word “pharaoh” means “Great House,” a reference to the palace where the pharaoh resides. While early Egyptian rulers were called “kings,” over time, the name “pharaoh” stuck. As the religious leader of the Egyptians, the pharaoh was considered the divine intermediary between the gods and Egyptians.
Having beautiful intricate hand carved detail to the feathers & face which really stands out stunning piece.
