Item Description
Magnificent 19th century continental Chinese style green lacquer, hand painted chinoiserie cupboard on chest with various scenes depicting scholars, immortals and warriors on the front and hand painted flowers and foliage to the sides. Scholars are educated and immortals represent longevity. Warriors show strength, and flowers, particularly the peach as shown, symbolize longevity and wealth.
The interior is pale blue (later painted) and the cupboard has two shelves offering plenty of storage space, including an ingenious rack to store your precious glasses.
The condition is remarkable considering its age, with some wear and minor losses to the paint work as you would expect with an item of furniture of this age.
There are two original keys which lock the cupboard and all the drawers.
This is a wonderful, hard to find piece of furniture which until now had remained with the same local family within a large country house.
In addition there are two matching chairs in this unusual colourway with lacquer work on the legs with signs of wear. The velvet upholstery has been replaced some time ago and has faded into a pale green. The 19th century chairs are sturdy. Please enquire if you would like to see pictures of these.
