Item Details

An attractive Southern Indian foot scrubber or vajri, dating to approximately the early 20th century. It is made of brass and is formed of a tear-shaped base with pierced lattice sides containing metal balls that rattle around, topped with a handle in the form of a peacock. The underside of the base is textured with dense crosshatched lines cut into it. Vajris were used by noble and wealthy Indian women to scrub the hard skin on their feet. Legend has it that the noise from the rattling balls in the base, known as ghungroos, were intended to warn people away when the ladies were bathing outside in streams or rivers, so that they could maintain their privacy.


This example is beautifully made with an attractive aged patina to the brass. The peacock handle in perfectly designed to fit very comfortably into a woman's hand.
