Item Description
Two carved cowrie shells dating to the early 20th century. One is carved with 'Mamma's Present', the other with 'Aunt's Present'. Carved shells have been produced for thousands of years, but they really gained popularity as souvenirs during the Grand Tours of the 18th century, and their production continues to this day. This type of cowrie shell is found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, so it is difficult to ascertain where this pair of shells was produced, but they appear to have come from the same source and date to the same period.
They are in good condition with minor signs of wear commensurate with their age.
