Item Details

A rare alms collection box for the Women's Work branch of the Methodist Missionary Society, dating to approximately 1932 when this branch was formed. The box is simply made of wood with a coin slot in the top, and a hinged opening in the base. The sides and top are covered with attractive chromolithographed paper labels. The sides show female missionaries undertaking various activities in far-flung parts of the world, each with an appropriate title illustrating the range of work carried out by Women's Work. 'Preach the Gospel' shows a missionary reading from the Bible; 'Heal the Sick' shows a woman nursing a patient; 'Teach the Nations' shows a woman working in a classroom. The back panel is entitled 'Suffer Little Children to Come unto Me' and shows a missionary reading to two children. The top bears the original Women's Work slogan 'Lighted to Lighten'. These boxes continued in use for many years - this one was last used in 1964 as evidenced by the remains of the last paper label sealing the bottom, when Mrs Brown collected 10/- during the 1st quarter!

This collection box has been well used and there is commensurate wear and some soiling to the paper labels.
