About Arthur Umanoff

Arthur Umanoff (1923–1985) was an influential American industrial designer, celebrated for his significant contributions to the mid-century modern movement. A graduate of New York’s prestigious Pratt Institute and the American School of Design in the early 1950s, Umanoff launched his career by collaborating with Post Modern Ltd, a New York design firm renowned for its modernist wrought iron and wood creations.

Throughout the 1960s, Umanoff worked closely with the furniture manufacturer Shaver Howard, where many of his innovative furniture designs were put into production. He also crafted elegant clocks for Howard Miller, further showcasing his versatility as a designer. Umanoff believed that design should be not only beautifully constructed and functional but also attainable for the everyday consumer.

His approach involved using natural materials and reimagining traditional furniture concepts, resulting in versatile designs that were celebrated for both their quality and their simplified, functional forms. Umanoff’s work reflects warmth and practicality, often featuring materials such as wrought iron, rattan, walnut, and birch. His designs are imbued with functional details while retaining a natural elegance, characterized by slender, tapered lines that embody the essence of mid-century style.
