Benjamin West PRA (1738 - 1820) was a British-American artist. Initially a self-taught portrait painter he went on to specialise in historical and religious subjects. He toured Europe whilst on The Grand Tour, eventually settling in London where he gained patronage from Kiing George III and was appointed historical painter to the court and Surveyor of the King's Pictures. He was also largely responsible for the formation of the Royal Academy, becoming the second president after Sir Joshua Reyoonds. He is buried in St. Paul's Cathedral.
Interestingy the reverse of the painting bears a tag from 'The Detroit Trust Company'. Originally founded in 1849 as The Detroit Savings Fund Institute and merging with the Detroit Savings Bank in 1956 to become the Detroit Bank & Trust Company. After various subsequent mergers eventually becoming Comerica Bank.
