Item Description
An unusual fretwork floor-standing corner cupboard of American interest, circa 1910, fitted with a drawer over a pair of cupboard doors and a lower drawer, the doors with fretwork cut female figures emblematic of America, the side panels with their male counterparts, the drawers and doors lined in fabric and with glass handles.
The cupboard was possibly originally bought as a kit for home construction. During the early 20th century publications such as 'The Handicraft Monthly Magazine' sold tools and kits for the production of items during leisure hours. Plans or all the materials required to make the finished article could be purchased. Items such as bookends, wall brackets or clock cases are more common but it's very unusual to find a large piece such as this.
In good condition throughout, the top would originally have had a low gallery back which is now missing,
87cm high, 54cm wide and 34cm deep at the centre. Each side panel is 38cm deep.
