Item Details

The Royal Automobile Club was formed in 1897 by Frederick Richard Simms, which set up an "associate section" to assist members with roadside assistance and to provide motoring services. The RAC have operated as one of the largest breakdown / recovery services / organisations in the UK, alongside the AA (Automile Association) since the start of the 20th century. Here we have an early double-sided, two-part enamel in wonderfully original condition; even the small rubber washers between the two parts remain in place...! Advertising the RAC's 'Get-You-Home Service'; the sign features the company's iconic blue and while colour scheme and bold lettering. The sign is likely to date to the 1930s/'40s and retains a good surface gloss, vibrant colours and has minimal losses. There is some nibbling around the outer edges (mainly the upper edge) and the mounting holes, plus a few chips to the face (more notable on one face tahn the other) but generally the sign would have to be considered a good example and remains fully legibile. The sign measures 66cm high x 55cm wide.
