Item Description
This is a late Victorian circular wooden flour bin with a banded body, folding handle, seperate lid and a tin insert/liner that has later (early-mid 20th century) skilfully painted decoration. The main body of the bin has been decorated with the word 'flour' and the lid with a detailed scene of 'Stock Mill' which I believe to the the 19th century Windmill in Stock, Essex. If this is the case, the windmill was originally built in 1816 and underwent various alterations throughout the 1800s and in the 1900s was powered by steam and then an internal combustion engine... Judging from the wear and the styling, it's likely that the decoration was done between the 1930s-'50s and adds a real vibrancy to an otherwise fairly mundane piece of kitchenalia. The bin has a diameter of 25.5cm and is 24.5cm high with the handle folded or 35cm high with the handle up.
