Item Details

These engravings by Dom Bernard de Montfaucon (b.1655 - d.1741) and show a three-sided bronze stand with bound satyrs at the bottom flanking reliefs from the life of Hercules and sphinxes on the centre register. The stand was owned by the First Earl of Oxford and was a gift from the poet Matthew Prior.

Dom Bernard was the founder of the discipline of palaeography and is regarded as one of the founders of modern archaeology.

These folio sized engravings are from the French publication L'antiquité Expliquée et Représentée en Figures, published in 15 volumes between 1719 and 1724.

The stand was topped by a faun and fauness in congress, these are not depicted in Dom Bernard’s engraving, probably owing to his religious calling as a Benedictine monk. However they can be seen, in the engravings of the stand held by the British Museum.

Mounted in hand-crafted wooden frames with glass, these are very fine and well proportioned, they will add elegance and grace to whichever space the next custodian decides to display them.
