Item Description
A mid-century oil on board painting of Cadogan Lane, London by Stephen Sims. Sims is a recognised artist, painting between 1940 and 1960. His favoured subject matter was urban landscapes, many featuring the architecture of London. These are now a visual record of areas that have changed over the years since they were executed. This painting of Cadogan Lane showcases Sim's competancy with colour and tone. He has managed to convey the 'narrowness' of the street by capturing in paint the amount of shadow created by the tall buildings shielding the sunlight into it. The painting is in good clean condition. Cadogan Lane, originally Little Cadogan Place, is a street in Belgravia running between Pont Street and the junction between Cadogan Place and D'Oyley Street. It is one of the streets in the area named after the Earls of Cadogan that were being laid out in this part of London in the 18th century. This lane was laid out by 1799. It is mainly made up of small mews houses which back onto the larger houses in Cadogan Place, Chesham Place, and Chesham Street.
