Serra-Badué favours the use of lithography in his work as a homage to his homeland, as Santiago de Cuba was the first place in the Western Hemisphere to use this printmaking technique. He is quoted as saying 'Through lithography I establish a second visual contact with what I leave behind'. This limited edition lithographic print is titled 'Autoretrato', or 'Self Portrait'. It shows Serra-Badué from behind, focusing on his passion for creating art. Painting a surrealist scene showing nude women, this is an unconventional yet wonderfully introspective and creative portrait, in the true fashion of this brilliant artist. Daniel Serra-Badué was a Cuban surrealist artist known for his dreamlike paintings, drawings and prints. Having studied art in various prestigious institutions and studios in Santiago, Havana, New York City and Barcelona, the artist went on to receive two Guggenheim Fellowships early in his career. He is described as 'an artist of uncompromising vision who dwells upon memory as if it were tangible', which is evident throughout his highly imaginative works.
