Item Description
A handsome and generous antique chair of fairly large proportions with an upholstered shaped camel back and wings in faded and worn pink velvet with a gold thread and crimson floral embroidery panel with gold thread tassels.
The seat is also upholstered in velvet horse hair stuffing and with matching gold thread tassels.
The exposed frame is constructed in peg-joined oak with turned front supports and a box stretcher with decorative carved details on the front and back. The sweeping arms terminate in beautifully carved baroque scroll details.
Originally this would have been a reclining chair with an iron ratchet system to raise and lower the back but at some point in its life, it has been converted to a fixed armchair. The iron hinges are still present on the back but it is very sturdy as it stands.
Probably French in origin but possibly English and dates from the late 17th to early 18th century. Circa 1680-1720.
The frame appears solid and sturdy and the joints seem sound. The exposed wooden sections are rich in colour and have a lovely naturally worn patina to them.
The webbing under the seat also is in good order. There is some wear to the velvet and embroidery sections from use but they are not worn through and this is forgiven as they are period panels. The upholstery is part of the reason we fell for the chair.
Measuring 133cm high x 61cm wide x 64cm deep. The seat height is roughly 48cm.
