Item Description
Early 20th century oil painting on canvas. 'The Climb of Accoules Marseille' by French artist Jean Aubéry (1880 - 1952) Beautifully painted atmospheric city street scene depicting the famous des Accoules Church tower. Signed lower right. There is a small and discreet area of damage to the left of the signature. The gilt wood frame is structurally sound with a generally aged appearance.

Jean Aubéry studied painting at the École des Beaux Arts in Marseille, transferring to study in the studio of the artist Jean-Leon Gerome at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. After a period teaching drawing at the Société de l'Enseignement Moderne, he decided to return to Provence and settled in Marseille.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris between 1905 and 1940 where he won many awards including a Silver Medal in 1931 and a Gold Medal in 1937 for two paintings, 'Quai de Rive Neuve, Marseille' and 'Dans mon jardin'. He also exhibited at local Salons and was noted for his ability to capture the intense Provencal light.
