Item Details

A pair of late 19th Century polychrome painted wooden Indian figures.

It’s likely that these figures were brought back to Britain from India as souvenirs in the late 19th century. The East India Company fuelled the desire for paintings and figures by travellers by setting up their own workshops to meet the demand. This pair of figures are well carved and neatly painted even down to the man's moustache and with real platted human hair on the female figure. With their original paper labels still in place, in great condition considering their age.
