Item Description

This is the most beautiful Victorian lithograph print on good heavy paper, with saturated rich jewel-like colours by the artist J. E. Rogers (1838-1896). This is one of the illustrations from the first edition book of children's poems 'Ridicula Rediviva' (ridiculous gem) 1869.  This particular illustration is to the well-known poem 'Little Jack Horner'. Illustrated with a fanciful Medieval interpretation, which was a popular fashion at the time - this was the time of Pugin's revivalist Gothic architecture for example and Rogers himself was a trained architect. This print is so beautiful it almost looks like the original hand-painted piece. It is in extremely good condition, well-mounted but could do with glazing and framing to protect it.  On the verso is written in pencil 'Redicula Rediviva' J.E.Rogers - 1869.  This picture framed up will look lovely in a children's nursery.

James Edward Rogers (1838 – 1896) was an Irish artist, architect, and book-illustrator whose early career was in his home city of Dublin. Rogers was the son of James Rogers, a barrister and Queen's Counsel. He was taken as a pupil by Benjamin Woodward, a notable Irish architect. In 1876 he moved to London, where he is believed to have worked only as an artist. Rogers struck up friendships with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Morris, while they were painting Arthurian murals at the Oxford Union.
Macmillan published two illustrated books of nursery rhymes by Rogers, Ridicula Rediviva (1869) and Mores Ridiculi (1871) and also an edition of Dinah Craik's The Fairy Book in 1870. More of his colour lithographs were used in Present Pastimes of Merrie England (Cassell, Petter, & Galpin, 1873). He exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy from 1881, and in 1888 at the Irish Exhibition in London.
