Item Description
An amazing set of antique Palissy style wall plates featuring lobsters and crabs in incredible three dimensional detail and outstanding colour and glaze. Made by Albert Jose da Rainha in the early 20th century with vibrant majolica glazed colours, and in the naturalist style of 16th century ceramicist, Palissy. They feature fantastic workmanship, all hand made. The attention to detail is wonderful, with lobster or crab sitting in the center of the plates on a bed of sand, with claws and legs arched away from the body. Then surrounded by mussels and cockles, with seaweed formations.
There are 2 backstamped, but the others completely identical in colour and technique. With 4 lobster plates, each one represented by a different animal, and 2 crab plates, all with holes and cord in the back for display, and ready to hang. All are in excellent condition. These would be incredible in any room in the house, and rare to find these as a set.
