It is difficult to find the superlatives to describe these amazing heirloom sheets and the photos just can't do the fabulous texture justice.
This is a hand spun, hand woven and hand stitched mid 19th century French hemp sheet - a very exciting find.
I unearthen quite a few of them and they came from the depths of rural Burgundy and have been stored in a big farmhouse for over 100 years. The hemp will have been grown, prepared, spun and woven on the farm where I found them.
Now freshly laundered and ready to start a new life.
The hemp is quite fine in comparison to many that I've had over the years, this is a fabulous quality piece. It has such character and is a mid stone/biscuit sort of colour; hard to describe and harder to photograph. Finished with narrow hems and made in the traditional way with a centre seam joining two narrow panels of fabric. Entirely hand stitched, of course.
Please don't buy this to cut up! I have plenty of unhemmed/unfinished hemp that can be used for that, please just ask me! But do enjoy using this, it'll make a fabulous tablecloth, bed cover, sofa throw, curtain etc. Easily machine washed.
