Item Description

An absolutely amazing, and enormous, French copper pie mould with incredible provenance. This is engraved “L P” to either side of a crown, above “BIZY. 1 P 1845”. The L.P and crown is the mark of King Louis Philippe I, who was the penultimate King of France. “BIZY” relates to the Chateau Bizy at Vernon. A residential castle was built at Bizy in 1675 and went through various ownership. In the late 18th century it was owned by the Orleans family and at the time of the revolution it was confiscated and declared a national property. Under the Restoration the Duchess of Orleans bought back her property and her son, Louis Philippe, King of France stayed there frequently and made many improvements. He spent much time there between 1840 and 1848 when he sold the property on and this mould dating from 1845 would have been made then, for the Royal household. The mould is also stamped with a number “N. 250”.
Just for further interest, Louis Philippe was also the Duke of Chartres and we purchased this mould in Chartres.
In terms of size it is the largest pie mould that we have ever seen. It would be large enough to produce a Yorkshire Christmas Pie which consisted of a bird within a bird within a bird, all encrusted in pastry. This mould was certainly made for a pie fit for kings.
It is made, in three hinged parts, from a heavy gauge of copper. All three hinges have the original steel pegs holding them together but the top of one is missing so only two are removable. The design consists of two very well modelled, geometric bands both above and beneath a fluted central section. It is in excellent condition and the tinning, to the interior, is still in very good, usable condition.
Dimensions: Height 27.5cm. Diameter 31.2cm. Width across the hinges 32cm.
Price includes postage within the U.K., shipping to the U.S.A and most of Western Europe.
